Website Redesign Packages in NZ: Should a Small Business Rebuild?

A website redesign package covers the same discovery, design and build as a new site. Website design simply works differently once a site has history, because the content, URLs and search visibility it has already earned all have to move across with it.

Whether you need one comes down to a comparison most owners never run: three years of keeping the old site alive, against the rebuild quote plus three years of looking after the replacement, because the new site needs maintaining too. This article prices that comparison for the owner of a professional site a few years old, still the centre of the business’s digital presence, and starting to cost real money in fixes and lost enquiries. Maintenance becomes a false economy when those two totals close in on each other.

THE SHORT VERSION
A redesign package is a new build plus the migration of everything your current site has earned. Whether you need one is a three-year cost comparison, not a calendar. Often the honest answer is better upkeep, and this article says so where that is true.

A Redesign Is a Website Design Package for a Site You Already Have

Most packages are created for brand-new builds, so what redesign changes is where the work starts: with an audit, not a blank page. Providers use the three words below interchangeably, so compare the scope rather than the tier name.

A Refresh Keeps the Platform You Have

The cheapest depth and the shortest-lived: a customised template, tidied content and small fixes, all on the engine you are already running. It works when a basic website sits on a sound, supported platform, and it genuinely saves time and money when that is the case. What it cannot do is touch the layer underneath.

A Redesign Rebuilds on a Current Stack

New design and engineering on a supported platform, with your content, URLs and existing search visibility carried across. Many rebuilds of a working business site land here. A template-based site whose platform is ageing out belongs in this tier rather than the one above, because a refresh never touches the layer causing the trouble.

A Ground-Up Build Is Scoped, Not Packaged

This is for sites whose specific features or scale have outgrown packaged work, and it is scoped through discovery rather than sold off a list. Custom website design packages at this depth are really project quotes wearing a label, so expect a custom package priced from an audit. Be suspicious of anyone who tells you which depth you need without looking at your site first.

Six Signs Maintenance Is Losing

There is no fixed expiry date on a website, and the tidy statistics about rebuilding every two or three years are almost all published by companies that sell rebuilds. In our own quoting, the conversation surfaces somewhere between three and five years in, and what decides it is how well the site was built rather than how old it is: a well-designed website earns its keep for years longer than a rushed one.

The case we meet most often in an audit is the site that looks perfectly presentable and is locked to a builder that stopped shipping releases years ago, where replacing the design alone would leave the reason maintenance keeps getting dearer completely untouched.

So platform support, performance and what the business requires now all matter more than the launch date, and the question underneath the timeline is whether the website meets the business needs it was built for, or the ones the business has today. Six signals say the answer is no:

HOW TO WEIGH THE SIX
Sort them by severity, not by count. Cosmetic and content problems are a maintenance job, however many of them you have. One platform that cannot be upgraded is a rebuild conversation on its own.

Your Theme or Page Builder Is Abandoned

No security or compatibility releases for a year, the developer has stopped answering technical support requests, or a plugin you depend on has been pulled from the WordPress repository. Every change around it becomes a gamble.

A Platform Upgrade Is Blocked

Your host wants to retire an old PHP version, and the plugins the business actually runs on have no compatible replacement. PHP 8.1 stopped receiving security fixes at the end of 2025, so standing still is not neutral either.

The Layout Predates Today's Screen Sizes and Devices

If the site was never built as a responsive website, the user experience on a phone is costing you enquiries. Pinching to zoom, scrolling sideways, forms that will not fit.

Design and Brand Have Drifted Apart

The business has moved on, and the site still wears its launch year. Every new offer has to be squeezed into a shape that no longer fits it.

The Business Has Outgrown the Site

You offer products or services the site never mentions, want an online store, and have no platform to showcase your products.

The Patch Bill Keeps Growing

Fixes cost more each time because nobody wants to touch the ageing stack. Between fixes the site quietly stops attracting customers.

Should a Small Business Maintain
or Rebuild? Three Years of Each

Keep Maintaining It

Care plan at $200 a month$7,200

Repairs beyond the plan, roughly $600 a year$1,800

Three-year total$9,000

Plan the Rebuild

Rebuild quote$10,000

Care plan at $100 a month$3,600

Three-year total$13,600

Maintenance wins while the platform is current and the problems are content-sized. If the stack is supported, the pages load quickly, and enquiries still arrive, a simple website doing its job is a business asset worth protecting, and steady website maintenance costs far less per year than any rebuild. New photos, sharper wording and updated offers need no new engineering. Spend the difference on the work itself. These figures are one worked example, so run the sums on your own invoices.

Rebuilding wins when the problems are structural. The platform is ageing out, the design no longer fits, or you are trying to expand your reach and the site cannot carry it: no store, no room for new services, nothing to connect your tools to. If the plan includes selling online, that is ecommerce development and belongs in the quote from day one. Patching cannot fix structure, and the totals land closer than either side admits.

How a Professional Website Redesign Runs

Audit and Discovery

It starts with understanding your business: what the site already earns in search, which pages pull their weight, and what your business goals for the next few years require. It produces a content and URL inventory, and it is where a good studio tells you if a rebuild is premature.

Design

Custom design shaped by the audit rather than by fashion: responsive design across every layout, the brand carried through properly, and revision rounds agreed in the quote before work starts.

Build

The site is assembled on a current, supported stack with a user-friendly content management system, so everyday edits stop needing a developer on call.

Migration

Website content, images and forms move over, every existing URL is inventoried and either kept or redirected to its closest relevant replacement, and pages that no longer earn their place are streamlined out rather than quietly dropped. Your domain stays yours, your email normally stays with its existing provider, and web hosting is judged case by case.

Launch and Handover

The old site should stay live until the switch, so disruption is short, though DNS or hosting changes can still cause brief downtime. Tested across all devices, launched with rankings and customer engagement watched, then training and a warranty period so the new site is genuinely yours.

What Website Redesign Packages Cost in NZ

The cost of website design does not fall much the second time around. Website redesign cost sits close to what it costs to build a website from scratch, because migration adds work rather than removing it. Cost depends on several factors, the same ones that drive a first build:

  • Design complexity
  • The number of pages worth keeping
  • What integrations the business runs on
  • Whether e-commerce functionality is being added

The cost to redesign a website in New Zealand tracks the brackets in our guide to what web design costs in New Zealand: a few thousand dollars for a light refresh, and roughly $6,000 to $20,000 and beyond for a full redesign. Time is the other price, and content and migration decisions are usually the slow part of it.

What a Cheap Redesign Leaves Out

If a redesign comes in well below an equivalent new build, check whether migration, redirects, content work and post-launch testing are actually in the scope. Not every package includes migration, and what packages offer at the same price varies enormously in its level of customisation. Two packages with the same number on them can be entirely different products.

Affordable web design advertised at the bottom of the range usually means a new-build template with your logo swapped in and no migration anywhere in the scope. Judge a quote on long-term value instead. A cost-effective website is one priced against its next five years with upkeep included, and a cheaper build becomes the expensive one the moment it discards URLs, content and search visibility you already had. That is what professional web development is for.

Our own tiers are public on our pricing page, rebuild or new build alike.

Protect the Rankings Your Old Site Has Earned

Rankings are often the most valuable thing a website for a small business owns, and a redesign can move them even when the work is handled carefully. An established site has assets a new build starts without: pages that already rank for keywords worth having, links from other sites, and the enquiry history behind a professional online presence.

Search engines have to reassess much of what changed, and Google’s own guidance tells site owners to expect temporary fluctuation during a move. A good migration limits both the risk and the recovery time.

What a Migration Must Cover

Pull Google Analytics first and note which pages bring enquiries and where conversion happens. Then insist the package covers:

  • A full URL inventory and redirect map
  • The purpose and the on-page basics of each page carried over
  • Internal links checked
  • Search engine optimisation (SEO) testing at launch and through the weeks after

Pages optimised years ago can keep earning through a move handled that way, while brand-new ones take time to gain visibility.

Five Questions Before You Sign

When you are choosing a website design package, choosing the right provider matters more than the package name on the invoice.

  • What happens to my rankings, and how will changes be monitored after launch?
  • Is migration inside the scope, or an extra?
  • Who owns the files and the accounts when we are finished?
  • Does the price include GST, and what does the quote leave out?
  • What will maintenance cost once the new site is live, and how does the scope map to my business objectives?

GET THE ANSWER IN WRITING Consumer Protection’s guidance on quotes and estimates is blunt: an estimate is a best guess, while an accepted quote is a confirmed maximum a provider cannot exceed unless you agree to extra work.

The Provider Should Tell You Which Side of the Line You Are On

A studio that sells both maintenance and redesign has to be honest about the boundary, because it gets paid either way. Elsewhere, the incentive runs in one direction only: a maintenance provider can put off a rebuild that is overdue, a design studio can push one that is premature.

A provider who has collected monthly fees for years on a site with an abandoned theme and a blocked upgrade has been billing you around a decision they should have surfaced. The fastest way a provider can build trust is to recommend the cheaper option.

Compare website packages on what they migrate, not just on what they add, because most of what you will find advertised is small business website design packages priced for brand-new builds. Code Artists is an Auckland studio and both sides of this line are our day job. Bring us an ageing site and the packages are tailored to your business needs from that audit, and if the honest answer is that good upkeep will carry you another two years, that is the answer you get.
